911: Prayer, Fasting and a Gift of God¬â„s Love (With Prayers and Readings)

911. The very phrase chills me. Like you, I remember exactly when I heard that terrorists had successfully flown a plane into the WTC. Then another. And word about a third plane aimed at the Pentagon and a fourth crashing in a field in Pennsylvania.

We watched the heroic rescue efforts at WTC and the horrific crumbling to the ground of those tall proud towers. We wept. We consoled. We reached out to family members and close friends. Our President inspired us. We sought solace in God.

Now a year later we wonder what to do on 9/11/2002?

I have set aside the day for prayer, fasting and sending a gift of God’s love to a Muslim country.

I will be praying for the world with special attention to Islamic countries that have been so resistant to the news of God’s love in Jesus Christ. I understand that not all Muslims are terrorists and not all terrorists are Muslims, but it would be foolish to deny that a radical, hateful minority within Islam is seeking to lead the rest of Islam in a Jihad.

I will be fasting because denying the physical keeps me concentrated on the spiritual and for me 911 will now always be a sacred day, a day that reminds me that darkness can touch down on earth in memorable ways as can light. Jesus taught us to pray ‘thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven’; 911 stands in stark contrast to God’s will.

I will be sending a gift of God’s love to an Islamic country. This year I have chosen to contribute to the Bible League’s work in Indonesia. Why Indonesia and why the Bible League? 1) Indonesia is the largest Muslim country in the world (population 210 million with 85% Muslim) 2) 70% of those Muslims are nominal and are not active in their mosque. 3) The church in Indonesia has developed materials for children, teens, adults and professionals that help the Muslims learn about God’s love—and gives them a Bible at the end of the study. 4) This is resulting in many converts to Christianity.

Of all the reactions I can have on 911 the sending of a gift of God’s love through a Bible just makes the most sense to me. Church planters in Indonesia have identified over 50,000 villages with no church and they need about 50 Bibles per village to launch a church. At $4 apiece that means for $200 I can actually “plant a church” in an Islamic village. I hope to plant a few of them!

Together we can make a difference and turn 911 from a day of mourning to a day of rejoicing!

I. PRAYERS

Psalm 23 (Prayed by Todd Beamer and ATT operator on 911)
The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me to lie down in green pastures: he leads me beside the still waters. He restores my soul: he leads me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; your rod and your staff they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies: you anoint my head with oil; my cup runs over. Surely goodness and mercy will follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.

Psalms 30:6-12
6 And in my prosperity I said, I shall never be moved. 7 LORD, by thy favor thou hast made my mountain to stand strong: thou didst hide thy face, and I was troubled. 8 I cried to thee, O LORD; and unto the LORD I made supplication. 9 What profit is there in my blood, when I go down to the pit? Shall the dust praise thee? shall it declare thy truth? 10 Hear, O LORD, and have mercy upon me: LORD, be thou my helper. 11 Thou hast turned for me my mourning into dancing: thou hast put off my sackcloth, and girded me with gladness; 12 To the end that my glory may sing praise to thee, and not be silent. O LORD my God, I will give thanks unto thee forever.

Matthew 6:9-13 The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father who art in Heaven, hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever.

Prayer of Saint Francis of Assisi
Lord, make us instruments of your peace.
Where there is hatred let us sow love;
Where there is injury, pardon;
Where there is discord, union;
Where there is doubt, faith;
Where there is despair, hope;
Where there is darkness, light;
Where there is sadness, joy.
Grant that we may not so much seek
To be consoled as to console;
To be understood as to understand;
To be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive;
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
And it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

For Those Who Suffer
For those who suffer and those who cry this night,
give them repose, Lord; a pause in their burdens.
Let there be minutes where they experience peace,
not of man but of angels.
Love them, Lord, when others cannot.
Hold them, Lord, when we fail with human arms.
Hear their prayers and give them the ability to hear you back
in whatever language they best understand.

Prayer of St. Patrick
I take for my sureties:
The power of God to guide me,
The might of God to uphold me,
The wisdom of God to teach me,
The eye of God to watch over me,
The ear of God to hear me,
The word of God to give me speech,
The hand of God to protect me,
The way of God to go before me,
The shield of God to shelter me….
Christ be with me, Christ before me,
Christ behind me, Christ within me,
Christ beneath me, Christ above me,
Christ at my right, Christ at my left,
Christ in the heart of every man who thinks of me,
Christ in the mouth of every man who speaks to me,
Christ in every eye that sees me,
Christ in every ear that hears me.

Traditional Gaelic Blessing
Deep peace of the running wave to you.
Deep peace of the flowing air to you.
Deep peace of the quiet earth to you.
Deep peace of the shining stars to you.
Deep peace of the infinite peace to you.

From the Sarum Primer Saint Augustine’s Prayer Book
GOD be in my head, and in my understanding;
GOD be in my eyes, and in my looking;
GOD be in my mouth, and in my speaking;
GOD be in my heart, and in my thinking;
GOD be in my end, and my departing.

Prayer Of An Unknown Confederate Soldier
I asked God for strength that I might achieve,
I was made weak that I might learn humbly to obey.
I asked for health that I might do greater things,
I was given infirmity that I might do better things.
I asked for riches that I might be happy,
I was given poverty that I might be wise.
I asked for power that I might have the praise of men,
I was given weakness that I might feel the need of God.
I asked for all things that I might enjoy life,
I was given life that I might enjoy all things.
I got nothing that I asked for,– but everything I had hoped for.
Almost despite myself, my unspoken prayers were answered.
I am, among all men, most richly blessed.

Count Your Blessings
Count your blessings instead of your crosses;
Count your gains instead of your losses.
Count your joys instead of your woes;
Count your friends instead of your foes.
Count your smiles instead of your tears;
Count your courage instead of your fears.
Count your full years instead of your lean;
Count your kind deeds instead of your mean.
Count your health instead of your wealth;
Love your neighbor as much as yourself.

SIOUX PRAYER
Grandfather Great Spirit All Over The World
The faces of living things are alike.
With Tenderness, They Have Come Up Out Of The Ground.
Look Upon Your Children That They May Face The Winds
And Walk The Good Road To The Day Of Quiet.
Grandfather Great Spirit fill Us With The Light.
Give Us The Strength To Understand And The Eyes To See.
Teach Us To Walk The Soft Earth As Relatives to All That Live.

Psalm 27: 1-4, 13&14.
The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? 2 When evildoers assail me to devour my flesh my adversaries and foes they shall stumble and fall. 3 Though an army encamp against me, my heart shall not fear; though war rise up against me, yet I will be confident. 4 One thing I asked of the Lord, that will I seek after: to live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord, and to inquire in his temple. 5 For he will hide me in his shelter in the day of trouble; he will conceal me under the cover of his tent; he will set me high on a rock. 6 Now my head is lifted up above my enemies all around me, and I will offer in his tent sacrifices with shouts of joy; I will sing and make melody to the Lord.13 I believe that I shall see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. 14 Wait for the Lord; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the Lord!

II. READINGS Bibles for Indonesia

Matthew 28:18-20
18 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.

Psalm 119:105-106
Your word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path.

Luke 9:13-17
13 But he said to them, “You give them something to eat.” They said, “We have no more than five loaves and two fish unless we are to go and buy food for all these people.” 14 For there were about five thousand men. And he said to his disciples, “Make them sit down in groups of about fifty each.” 15 They did so and made them all sit down. 16 And taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven, and blessed and broke them, and gave them to the disciples to set before the crowd. 17 And all ate and were filled. What was left over was gathered up, twelve baskets of broken pieces.

Revelation 7:9-12
9‚ After this I looked, and there was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, robed in white, with palm branches in their hands. 10‚ They cried out in a loud voice, saying, “Salvation belongs to our God who is seated on the throne, and to the Lamb!” 11‚ And all the angels stood around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures, and they fell on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, 12‚ singing, “Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and power and might be to our God forever and ever! Amen.”
