CSC #2: Savvy about Culture

So we’ve agreed that a CSC is a follower of Jesus who is
Serious about faith
Savvy about faith and culture
& skilled at relating the two¢â‚¬¦

So what does it mean to be savvy about culture & popular culture in particular?
To be ¢â‚¬Ëœsavvy means to ¢â‚¬Ëœget it'” and there are four BIG things you need to get about popular culture

First: It is generally superficial¢â‚¬¦
Entertainment means diversionary
Amusement means mindless.
And we live in a celebrity culture¢â‚¬¦two words. Paris Hilton!

Second: Popular Culture is generally soulless
There was a day when culture flowed from a rich spiritual, intellectual and creative life. It came from the soul¢â‚¬¦

Today’s superficial, intellectually and artistically bereft culture is not sustained by great art and big ideas¢â‚¬¦

NO¢â‚¬¦. the good the true and the beautiful have been replaced by
money, marketing and technology.

Popular culture is centered in money, spread by marketing
and sustained by new technologies

Third. Popular culture is extraordinarily influential.
It is a teacher & preacher
It is a storyteller
It is where young people form identity and community.
It is a common language.

Fourth. It is often spiritually delusional
Today PC is like a blender¢â‚¬¦you stick all kinds of beliefs in and push the button.
It is morally and spiritually relativistic
And yet is a place where people do their theology.
The religion editor for PW put it this way:
More theology is conveyed in,
and probably retained
from one hour of popular television,
than from all the sermons
that are also delivered
on any given weekend
in America’s synagogues, churches and mosques”

A savvy follower of Jesus recognized that pc offers both a threat and opportunity

Represents a Threat:
Because it is a powerful, pervasive culture-shaper that conveys beliefs, values and behaviors antithetical to our faith

Represents an Opportunity
Because it is the storyteller & common language of our culture, which once learned, allows us access to a spiritual conversation already taking place in culture.

To avoid the threats and engage the opportunities requires skills and seriousness of faith¢â‚¬¦.and that’s where we’ll pick up next week on the CSC¢â‚¬¦
