CSC #13 Taking a Stand

The CSC stands up for what he believes¢â‚¬¦.
Last week the mighty News Corporation
Bowed to pressure When Chairman Rupert Murdock
pulled the plug on a controversial O.J. Simpson book and television deal

In 1994 Simpson, was accused of murdering his wife,
Nicole Simpson and her friend, Ron Goldman.
He was found liable in civil court but was acquitted in criminal court¢â‚¬¦
In the book and TV interview
Simpson planned to reveal
how he would have killed his wife & Goldman
“If He Did It.”

This grotesque production reminded Students of history
of the era just prior to the fall of the roman empire¢â‚¬¦
an age when the vilest of acts were performed in the coliseums
and billed as entertainment¢â‚¬¦

So today,
Each week some entertainment programmers
Heap plates high with garbage
And a sizeable portion of the public eats it.

The bottom feeders in our entertainment media
have shifted from approving mind and soul numbing content
to actually seeking it out¢â‚¬¦and they’ve made a lot of $ doing it..

So imagine their surprise
When the Simpson project
Resulted in a week’s worth of ferocious criticism¢â‚¬¦

Critics called for boycotts
Bill O’Reilly spoke out against the project on a fox owned network
Bookstores announced they might not carry the book¢â‚¬¦

BUT the real nail in the coffin came
When numerous broadcast stations announced
they would refuse to carry the program¢â‚¬¦

And here our story turns from the lessons
Of history and the decline of the roman empire.
To the lessons of scripture and the Babylonian empire¢â‚¬¦

Bible students know young Daniel
As a Jewish boy who stood up for what he believed
While in Babylonian captivity¢â‚¬¦

He would rather face the fiery furnace or be plopped in a den of lions¢â‚¬¦
Than to violate his conscience¢â‚¬¦

In the background of the OJ Simpson, Rupert Murdock story¢â‚¬¦
There are a number of contemporary Daniel’s
But one stands out.

Pappas Telecasting Company is the largest privately-held,
commercial television broadcast group in the United States.
The company owns 27 stations, including market-leading FOX stations.

Chairman Harry J. Pappas decided not to carry the Simpson show.
He announced that it was unsavory and intolerable
for Simpson to benefit from his crime¢â‚¬¦
He reminded Murdock that there was a time when
Television could be welcomed into the family home¢â‚¬¦
He simply took a stand for what he believed was right
Despite the potential economic consequences¢â‚¬¦

Why would he do this?
Like Daniel of old,
Harry Pappas operates from his deeply held beliefs.
He was raised Greek Orthodox.
He knows right from wrong
And tries to operate his business according to those beliefs.

When Murdock pulled the plug on “If I Did It”
Pappas called the network’s decision
“a victory for the people who spoke out¢â‚¬¦”

This is a call for each of us to know what we believe
And stand up for it in our sphere our influence¢â‚¬¦

The CSC stands up for what he believes¢â‚¬¦
And occasionally it results in victory¢â‚¬¦
